COPAA Welcomes Reinstatement of Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry
Council of Pakistan American Affairs, welcomes the reinstatement of Iftikhar M. Chaudhry as Chief Justice of Supreme Court of Pakistan. The peaceful end to protests will defuse the tensions that had threatened to turn into violent confrontation.
COPAA supports the announcement made by Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gillani who on National television declared "I restore the deposed chief justice and others according to the promise made by me and the president," said Gillani, after a tumultuous night of high-level meetings. Gillani also ordered the release of detainees and urged all sides to move forward.
COPAA believe this action will bring credibility and authority to institutions in Pakistan, and bring in a period of constructive changes within Pakistan. COPAA requests the lawmakers to make an amendment to the Constitution of Pakistan to reflect the independence of the Judiciary and media.
We ask President Zardari to lift Governor rule in Punjab. Let the democratically elected members of Punjab Assembly vote for their leader and move the country forward.
Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton welcomes Pakistan's decesion to reinstate Iftikhar Chaudhry.
